The numbers are in and it doesn’t look good for the latest X-Men film. The latest installment in the franchise is poised to lose more than $100 million USD following the worst opening in the Marvel film’s history. Dark Phoenix was supposed to be the grand send off under 20th Century Fox. With a Rotten Tomatoes score of just 22 percent, the film only brought in $33 million domestically.
To put it in perspective, X-Men: Days of Future Past made $262.9 million USD worldwide on opening weekend, and Logan followed closely with $247.4 million USD. X-Men: Apocalypse — one of the franchise’s weakest films — opened with $166.6 million USD, $27 million USD more than 20th Century Fox’s new take Jean Grey. With a dismal performance like this, it is possible that we won’t see X-Men joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe for quite some time.
