PRADA PULLS PRODUCTS AND ISSUES APOLOGY OVER BLACKFACE CONTROVERSY

Following the swift and heavy backlash it received over a Holiday 2018 collection that is similar to that faced by H&M’s “Coolest Monkey in the Jungle”, luxury Italian fashion house Prada is pulling the Pradamalia accessories collection. Dubbed Otto and Toto, the two monkey-like figures sport  a dark, wooden body and red lips. Many have taken the brand to task as this is too close to blackface imagery. Civil rights lawyer Chinyere Ezie called for a boycott of Prada.

Prada released a an apology via Twitter stating the collection was  “not intended to have any reference to the real world and certainly not blackface” and that it would “withdraw the characters in question from display and circulation.”
