TIME PERSON OF THE YEAR: ‘THE GUARDIANS AND THE WAR ON TRUTH’

TIME Magazine has unveiled the covers for its annual “Person of The Year” issue. The individuals being bestowed this honor have been dubbed “The Guardians,” a group of journalists who have been targeted for their work. The group of indivuals includes Jamal Khashoggi, the Washington Post contributor who was killed at the Saudi Arabian consulate in Istanbul in October, Wa Lone and Kyaw Soe Oo, two Reuters journalists who were arrested one year ago in Myanmar while they were working on stories about the killings of Rohingya Muslims. The the fourth cover features Maria Ressa, chief executive of the Philippine news website Rappler. The executive was indicted last month on tax evasion charges, a case that free speech and civil liberties advocates have warned is part of a wider crackdown on dissent by Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte’s administration.

Special prosecutor Robert Mueller was named as a runner-up.

Notable Quotes: “They are representative of a broader fight by countless others around the world — as of Dec. 10, at least 52 journalists have been murdered in 2018 — who risk all to tell the story of our time.” TIME Editor-in-chief Edward Felsenthal
