This past weekend news began to spread that the French Open would be banning Serena Williams‘ Nike black catsuit. According to reporting from ESPN, the new rule was announced by French Tennis Federation president, Bernard Giudicelli, who stated, “I think that sometimes we’ve gone too far.” He continued, referring to Williams’ black catsuit, “It will no longer be accepted. One must respect the game and the place.”
Nike is always going to go to bat for its athletes. The brand took to Twitter with the following response, “You can take the superhero out of her costume, but you can never take away her superpowers.” Fittingly, the statement was layered over a picture of Serena in the black catsuit.
