Following the news of Gigi Hadid backing out of Victoria’s Secret’s fashion show, we are now getting word that Katy Perry is no longer performing. According to Page Six, Perry failed to apply for a visa after being denied by Chinese officials to enter the country. “For every artist who wants to perform in China, officials comb through their social media and press reports to see if they have done anything deemed to be offensive to the country.”
Why this matters: The government learned that the songstress wore a sunflower dress and a Taiwanese flag during a 2015 performance in Taipei. Many interpreted Perry’s outfit as a form of support for the Sunflower Student Movement and had sparked controversy in China.
