Today we are getting the first look at Daniel Day Lewis’s final film before he calls it a career. Directed by Paul Thomas Anderson, Phantom Thread as Reynolds Woodcock, a renowned dressmaker who enters into a complex relationship with a strong-willed woman (Vicky Krieps) in 1950s post-war London. The film is already getting early Oscar buzz with Day-Lewis as a contender for the best actor Oscar at next year’s Academy Awards. Phantom Thread will land in U.S. theaters on Christmas Day.
Why This Matters: Day-Lewis announced his retirement from acting earlier this year, in a move that surprised many in the industry. “He is immensely grateful to all of his collaborators and audiences over the many years. This is a private decision and neither he nor his representatives will make any further comment on this subject,” a statement from his spokeswoman read.
