Real estate mogul, author, reality TV star and now President-elect Donald Trump has just been revealed as TIME’s 2016 Person of the Year. Trump shook the political world up en route to winning the presidential election in a very unconventional way. Every year the TIME editors choose the person or idea based on how they influenced the news and the world in the past year, for better or for worse. Trump beat out 10 other finalist including his Democratic rival Hillary Clinton.
“For reminding America that demagoguery feeds on despair and that truth is only as powerful as the trust in those who speak it, for empowering a hidden electorate by mainstreaming its furies and live-streaming its fears, and for framing tomorrow’s political culture by demolishing yesterday’s, Donald Trump is TIME’s 2016 Person of the Year,” TIME managing editor Nancy Gibbs wrote.
This marks the 10th time Trump has appeared on the magazine’s cover.
