The reported goal of this deal to support the development of a satellite-based internet system that could potentially bring internet access to rural areas that are currently without internet. The program would have hundreds of satellites orbiting 750 miles from Earth. The short distance would result in faster internet due to the short distance for electromagnetic signals to travel. This ambitious goal would provide much needed competition to traditional fiber optic cables found on land.
