Following the news that Sony had an interest in having Idris Elba be the next James Bond, the internet has been abuzz with many who have largely been in support of the decision.  It would almost seem like the perfect role considering Elba is a Brit himself. On the other hand, those that have been opposed to the choice are looking to his race instead of his ability to carry out the role. Pointing to the fact that Bond was a concept put together by novelist Ian Fleming and he wouldn’t want a black actor to play the role.

“James Bond is a total concept put together by Ian Fleming. He was white and Scottish. Period,” said political pundit Rush Limbaugh. “That is who James Bond is, was. But now [they are] suggesting that the next James Bond should be Idris Elba, a black Briton, rather than a white from Scotland. But that’s not who James Bond is and I know it’s racist to probably point this out.”

To which Elba responded via Twitter, “Isn’t 007 supposed to handsome? Glad you think I’ve got a shot! Happy New year people.” In an NPR interview in 2011 he said – “”I just don’t want to be the black James Bond. Sean Connery wasn’t [just] the Scottish James Bond, and Daniel Craig wasn’t [just] the blue-eyed James Bond, so if I played him, I don’t want to be called the black James Bond.”
