Given the ubiquity of smartphones and the advancement in the mapping technologies in the phones, stand along GPS devices are becoming a dying breed. As opposed to trying to compete straight up, Garmin is launching a device to compliment your smartphone by giving you a heads-up display on your cars windshield.

Set up is easy.  Simply affix a transparent film on your windshield then simply place your device just below it. From there, your device takes care of the rest.  Information displayed includes navigation info to display turn indicators, lane assist, estimated time of arrival, traffic delays and safety camera locations.  To actually use this feature you will need to make download the Navigon or StreetPilot apps.

Available via this summer from Garmin – $130
